Expeditions ahoy!

July 2, 2018
Belated review about one of the new features in Battle for Azeroth!
Greetings folks!

Today we're going to tell you about a new feature coming in Battle for Azeroth - Island Expeditions. It's not exactly big news at this point, but so far we haven't covered this topic properly. So, we're going to fix this!

In a nutshell: expeditions are a small-scale (3 players) scenario-based activity. Much like those you could've seen in Mists of Pandaria or the current Legion invasions. Yet, they're vastly different.

It would appear that all of Diablo 3's features feel more at home in WoW than anywhere else. The reason why we brought those up is because islands are somewhat reminiscent of Rifts: they offer unique experience using interchangeable templates. From what we know... they're quite good at it. The goal is simple: gather 6000 Azerite before your enemy does. Your opponents can either be enemy players (this is an option, not something that might happen randomly) or enemy faction champions controlled by an advanced A.I. So far "advanced" doesn't translate into "extremely challenging" but fighting NPC champions is both fun and satisfying. They come in sets of 3's, just like player teams, but rather than being a beefed-up version of player classes, like opponents in Trial of the Crusader, these guys bring unique abilities and skills which set them apart from the usual enemies of that type really well, but doesn't really disrupt the feeling of fighting human opponents. Yes, it sounds weird, but it's actually like that. For those interested in RP and other lore shenanigans - you can interact with champions of your faction as they usually hang out close to the recruiter NPC. There are various tactical options for those who wish to use them (like unique consumables avaliable specifically for these scenarious), but we're not going to cover them right now.

Back to islands themselves. The environment and inhabitants of each island will mix up with every playthrough: the game might drop you at same tropical islands but in a different spot, be inhabited with naga and lizardmen instead of kvaldir and bear different aesthetics (effigies, flotsam and so on). So far the system works like this: each week you get a set of 3 islands chosen at random from a pool. There are 7 islands right now, but additional areas are in development (for example Havenswood - an abandoned Gilnean village, which was announced at Blizzcon 2017 and datamined by the players).

These adventures are role-agnostic, meaning that you can do them with any setup you wish. Although, we think that having 2 or 3 healers is not very efficient. Simply because there are no NPCs that are going to do the job for you, unlike trials or questing, and since most points apparently come from killing rares and mini-bosses - you need people who can cut them down quickly. Not to mention that killing members of the enemy team also yields Azerite and those guys won't hesitate to gank you (yes, it sounds weird but enemy rogues DO EXACTLY THAT). These enemies also don't follow normal aggro rules, but having a tank is important for CC. Usually completing these scenarios takes from 15 to 20 minutes. They also feature multiple difficulties: Normal, Heroic, Mythic and PvP. The former is available at all times, while the rest unlock at 120. The rewards during leveling work in the same way with as world PvP quests in Legion (or any gear from world quests) with additional stuff being unlocked at 120 (this is OUR ASSUMPTION as we didn't see any rare stuff during 111-119).

All in all - this looks like quite an enjoyable activity, especially for leveling your alts. Among various rewards, you shall find mounts, pets, weapons and armor with unique looks as well as recolors of old items. There are lots of rewards to collect and we mean A LOT. So if you ever get tired or struggle with the difficulty - don't hesitate to take advantage of our services as our specialists will definitely be offering their help with farming. Not much is known about the PvP component yet (achievements and such), but be sure that if there's anything worth being had - we'll have people avaliable to save your time and help you get whatever you need.
